BOARD GAME AND PAJAMA DAY
Friday , December 23 - First Grade board game day and Pajama Day. Students should bring a board game to play and one stuffed animal to school.

IPADS
Two days a week we work with our new Ipads. The children are either working independently or in pairs on different skills. This is another wonderful tool for learning.

SMART BOARD
We use the Smart board every week to enhance the Treasures reading series. The games and activities are interactive. The children are enjoying using a variety of technology this year.

TREASURES
Each week the students are responsible to complete the work on their "To Do" list. They are working independently and in small groups during reading workshop time. They take out "just right " books to read from the library each week. I also supply them with new leveled readers weekly.

MATH
Please make sure your child turns in their "Home Links" and practices their facts.

THANKSGIVING

We have read several biographies this year. All about people who have inspired our lives, given us inspiration, and the courage we didn't know we had. The children seemed to have made a personal connection with Sarah Hale who persevered, with determination, strength, and a belief that all people should come together and reflect on the real purpose in life. That we should take the time to be thankful for family and friends. I want to personally thank you all for the joy you have given me in allowing me the opportunity to educate your children.

FLASH CARDS

We are going to be working on memorizing our math facts. All students will be assessed once a week and will be sent home with a note to let you know how they are progressing. It will say if they passed or need more practice. A big thank you to the parent volunteers for this math activity.

BURR...WINTER WEAR

The weather is getting colder and warm clothing is going to be a necessity. Please help your child practice putting on their winter gear. Hats, mittens, scarfs, boots especially, and zipping up. If you can label some of their clothing (name) it is easier to locate the owner if an item gets lost. Also send your child to school with an extra pair of socks to leave in their locker in case their feet get wet from melted snow.

HALLOWEEN

I want to thank the parents for putting together a wonderful Halloween party for the children. They were absolutely delighted with the activities and had a fabulous time.

HALLOWEEN

The festivities will begin after lunch. If you are picking up your child at the beginning of the lunch hour they will be waiting for you on the black top where they are always dismissed. Costumes are worn in the afternoon only. If they are staying for lunch send their costume with them in the morning. The party will be in the afternoon. NO TREATS are allowed due to food allergies. The parade begins at 2:15 p.m. I can't wait to see the costumes!

MS. NORRIS
Ms. Norris has been a wonderful asset to our first grade classroom. Her last day will be Friday, October14th. She has done a tremendous job in working with the children and will surely be missed. I would like for each student to write her a note at home to bring to school on Friday. These notes should include pictures and things that they enjoyed about her. We will cherish the fond memories of Ms. Norris.

HALLOWEEN
The classroom party will be from 1:30 - 2:15, followed by the Halloween parade around the block. Students will wear their costumes in the afternoon only. If your child is not going home to change into their costume at lunch they may bring their costume to school in the morning and can put it on after lunch. Please remember treats and any food items will not be allowed at the party. Bring your cameras to the parade to take many pictures of some fabulous costumes! It will be a spooktacular time!

COMPUTER LAB
Some students are missing head phones. Please ask your child if they have a pair to use at school. If not they need to be replaced. These are extremely necessary when they are working on their programs.

READING
Each student is being asked to leave one of their library books at school that is on their reading ability level to keep for a week at a time in their book bins. These chapter books will be replaced weekly.

WRITING
6+1 Traits
Stories can be told orally, through pictures, through words, or a combination of all three.

SPELLING
Spelling words for this week can be found on the tab at the top of the page. The test will be given on Friday.

OLYMPIC DAY

Wednesday, June 1st is Olympic Day! All students should wear their Poteracki Rock Star T-Shirts. They should also wear comfortable play clothes and gym shoes. If it is warm some students like to bring a water bottle on that day. This is optional.

PACKING UP

All students should bring a large garbage bag to school on Friday, June 3rd. We will be cleaning out our desks and lockers.

Oobleck
What you need:
3/4 cup cornstarch
1/2 cup water
food coloring
Pan and spoon
1.Using a spoon, evenly blend the water with the cornstarch in a pan.
2.Oobleck should be thick enough to form a ball by rolling it between your palms. Add more water or cornstarch if needed.
3.Stick your hand in the concoction. How does it feel?
Have fun with it!
DO NOT THROW OOBLECK DOWN THE DRAIN. IT MUST BE DISPOSED OF IN THE GARBAGE.
THEY ARE BRINGING SOME HOME WITH THEM TODAY.

Captain Bill Pinkney
We have gone on an incredible journey through the eyes of Captain Bill Pinkney who was the first African-American to sail solo around the world on his sailboat the Commitment. Some of our projects included sailing journals, maps of his voyage, and a sailing calendar.

Research Projects
Reading a number of biographies has sparked an interest in doing research projects. Students are beginning to choose topics to do their research on. Parent involvement will be a part of the completion of this project. They will be using a number of resources.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DR. SEUSS!
All of our activites centered around Dr. Seuss today. One of the most exciting was a station dedicated to experiencing Oobleck with our own two hands! Students had to decide whether it was a solid or a liquid. What do you think?

PJ Day - Friday, February 4th

Everyone can roll out of bed this Friday and come to school in their pajamas. They can bring a book of their choice and a stuffed animal to cuddle up with. We are going to have a splendid time reading together.

100th Day

The 100th day of school has been rescheduled to Monday, February 7th. Have your child wear their hand decorated t-shirts to school on Monday. We will have many 100 day activities and parade through the kindergarten classrooms.

100 DAY

Next Thursday is our 100 day celebration. Each child will receive a letter asking that they decorate a T-Shirt with 100 items. A letter is being sent home with specific directions. Along with doing a variety of activities the entire first grade will be parade through all of the kindergarten rooms. It's going to be a spectacular day!

Homework packets will be sent home every Friday and should be returned by the following Friday. This is a wonderful opportunity for you and your child to begin working together to create a positive supportive working environment. RECIPES

For our "How To" writing samples we are putting together a recipe book. We are asking that you send your child in with with a favorite recipe, along with a picture of themselves. Please have the recipe printed so it is easy for your child to read. I am extending the due date to Tuesday, December 7th. Thank you for your participation.

BRR... IT"S COLD!

Practicing at home how to zip coats, put on snow pants, and boots helps us get ready for our outdoor activities quicker at school. It is also a good idea to send your child with a spare pair of socks to keep in their locker just in case the ones they are wearing get wet.

SCROLL ROLLS

We are going to be making number scrolls in math. Each student will need to bring in a cardboard paper towel roll by Friday.

REPORT CARDS

Report cards will be sent home Friday. Each envelope needs to be signed and returned after viewing.

READING
Unit 2 in Open Court introduces your child to stories on animals. They will be reading both fiction and non-fiction stories. Students will begin researching and writing reports about animals. Some of the skills they will be working on are both the long and short vowel sounds. Antonyms will also be introduced. We have begun writing both narrative and expository stories. As we read through the various stories we are discussing main characters, settings, and the sequencing (beginning, middle, and end) of the story.

EVERYDAY MATH
Unit 2 teaches students to learn about three specific use of numbers. Telephone numbers, telling time both with analog clocks and digital, and counting money with both pennies and nickels. It is essential to practice both addition and subtraction facts with your child.

SOCIAL STUDIES
We continue to learn about the importance of having community helpers and their various jobs and responsibilities. Time For Kids magazine will give students an opportunity to discuss current events.

Unit 1, Let's Read
A variety of poems are used in this unit to convey rhyming words. Word families as well as long and short vowels are also introduced. Journal writing has begun and well as the Handwriting Without Tears program.

MATH
Unit 1, Everyday Math
This unit focuses on Number Order, Tally Marks, Graphs, and Number Writing. Some of the games that we have played are Top It and Scissors/Paper/Stone. It is also important to practice both addition and subtraction facts on a regular basis. Students will be going home with a Home Link. It is important to do this activity sheet the day they bring it home. The Home Link reviews the days math lesson. They should return it back to class upon completion.

SOCIAL STUDIES
Our first unit is about Family and Community Helpers. A variety of activities and resources will be used to help children understand the importance of both.
We will be using the magazine, "Time For Kids." It allows students to read and discuss current events. Please return your check for your child by Friday so we may place the order.

HOMEWORK
Reading - Your child should be reading nightly to increase their vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency skills. The reading log should be returned when completed. They may choose which book they would like to do the book report on.

Spelling Words - Your child should practice their spelling words nightly.

Math - Home Links, Return when completed.

A NEW BEGINNING

I am excited about starting the new school year. I want to be able to give you information about the current events happening both in our classroom and in our school. I will be using this blog to update and inform you of the events that will be occurring throughout the year.

Summer activities are very important to help children exercise both their mental and physical capabilities. Exploring and learning about new things through reading, writing, and educational websites will enhance your child's knowledge and skills. Family outings and vacations allow for growth, personal connections, and build fond memories. Embrace these treasured moments. As summer continues to melt away, I look forward to a wonderful new beginning in first grade with your child.

READING

Unit 9 - Students will be exploring the theme, "Being Afraid." Since April is poetry month we have read and written several poems and have compared and contrasted different forms of poetry. This unit continues to foster writing poetry. Some of the skills they will be exposed to are drawing conclusions, comparing and contrasting, comprehension strategies, and rereading the selections.

MATH
Unit 9 - Their will be multiple uses for the number grid in this unit. Addition and subtraction, adding on and patterning. There is also an extension of fraction concepts and exploring measurement, and symmetry.

Science
Many Inquiry skills will be taught in our unit on Organisms such as Observing, Hypothesizing, Analyzing Data, Experimenting, and Recording Data.

SOCIAL STUDIES
We are going to be taking a trip around the world. The children are putting together their passports and ready to begin their own journey. Maps, and several other resources including the use of the internet will guide them on their travels.

Unit 6: Journeys
Students will be circling the globe in a sailboat. Captain Bill Pinkney's Journey will cover 32,000 miles and last 372 days. Students will learn about his commitement to following his dream and the courage and perseverance that he had. Students will also learn about the preparation that it takes to prepare for a journey. They will also be doing a combination of narrative and informal writing.

MATH
Unit 6: Developing Fact Power
Many experiences with facts in first grade are provided through number stories, games, and working with manipulatives, both before and after the memorization process.

SOCIAL STUDIES
We are learning about the study of our Earth and its land, water, and people. Using our map skills we are learning vocabulary words such as equator, hemisphere, continents, and oceans. Geography plays an important part in this unit. I am also having the students compare globes and world maps to understand that both are representations of Earth.

SCIENCE
Students will be investigating, describing, and observing the properties of liquids. Some of the vocabulary that will be included in the lessons are opacity, viscosity, fluidity, and miscibility.

Unit 5: Weather
Genre will include nonfiction, fiction, and poetry. Skills introduced or reviewed are the long and short vowels, verbs, compound words, and contractions. Students will be responding to main ideas and details, classification, making predictions, summarizing, and cause and effect.

Unit 5
In unit 5 students are learning about place value, greater and less than, relationships between numbers, number stories, number models, and addition and subtraction facts using double digits.

SOCIAL STUDIES
Our focus this month is to learn about the contributions of African Americans to our society and to the world. We will be participating in several projects and reading biographies to bring greater awareness and sensitivity of people of all cultures.

SCIENCE
We are investigating solids in water. Students will be introduced to some new vocabulary such as buoyant force, volume, and surface tension.

Let It Snow!

The winter weather is upon us and we need to remember to dress appropriately. Please practice helping your child put on their winter gear so they may become independent in dressing themselves. We have begun working in our unit called,"Our Neighborhood at Work." Students will be reading and learning about communities and the people who work in them. They will also be developing the ability to use comprehension skills and strategies, to develop the ability to recognize the relationships among consonant and vowel spellings, syllables, and words. Students will read genres about a number of different occupations through non fiction and poetry.

MATH
In Unit 4 students will work with linear measures, review and extend their use of thermometers, and practice using clocks. They will be using rulers and tape measures. Also by making scrolls they will increase their knowledge of number sense and learn about place value. Continued practice on addition and subtraction facts by memorization will enhance your child's math skills.

SOCIAL STUDIES
"Where We Live," introduces the students to the meaning of what some of Earth's natural resources are. We will also be having discussions about our seasons and the different types of weather we experience.

SCIENCE
Everything in our world is made out of matter. Students are investigating solids and liquids, and their properties. By experimenting and observing they will understand that volume refers to the amount of space that matter occupies and mass is a measure of the amount of material that matter contains. They will be writing up their observations in their science journals.

Halloween festivities will take place on Friday, October 30th in the afternoon. An extended lunch hour will be provided for those students choosing to go home to put on their costumes and return back to school. The lunch period will be from 11:45 to 1:15. I will be picking up the students from the same doors that they arrive at in the morning. The room parents are providing us with a wonderful party full of games and activities from 1:45 to 2:15. The parade will begin on the black top behind the school at 2:20 until 2:45. Don't forget to bring your cameras!

Unit 3 Theme: Things That Go!
This unit focuses on the way people travel. We will discuss and read stories about modes of transportation. Some of the skills will involve making predictions and using comprehension strategies.

EVERYDAY MATH
Unit 3: Visual Patterns,Number Grids, Even and Odd Numbers, Dimes, and an introduction to the Frames and Arrows Routine. Frames and Arrows is a diagram in which the arrow rule and the first number are both given. It allows the children to learn about Patterns, Algebra, and Computation.

WRITING DEVELOPMENT
Students will be writing in the Narrative and Expository form. Our Expository Spider stories are up in the hallway for public viewing. They look fabulous!

SOCIAL STUDIES
People Everywhere
Students will be focusing on the community. We will be learning about all the different jobs one might see in a community like Oak Park. They will continue to use their maps.

SCIENCE
We prepared our terrariums! We discussed what supplies are needed for an organism's habitat for survival. Students know that plants and animals need water, and that animals depend on other organisms for food, and that plants make their own food. All of the students have a science journal in which entries are placed on a regular basis.

READING
Unit 2 in Open Court introduces the students to stories on animals. They will be reading both fiction and non-fiction material. Students will begin writing reports about animals. Some of the skills they will be working on are both the long and short vowel sounds. Antonyms will be introduced. They have begun writing both narrative and expository stories. As we read through the various stories we are discussing main characters, settings, and the sequencing (beginning, middle, and end) of the story.

EVERYDAY MATH
Unit 2 focuses on the introduction of both addition, and subtraction facts, time and money. Various games and activities are used to enhance their understanding of these skills. Home links are an extension of the lessons taught that day. It is a follow up activity that should be completed and returned to school as soon as possible.

SOCIAL STUDIES
Unit 1:People Everywhere
Students will be learning about community helpers. They are learning about the various jobs one might see in their own community. We will also be introducing map skills and terms such as compass rose and map key.

A NEW BEGINNING
I am very excited about starting the new school year. We are off to a great start and my students are very enthusiastic about learning. I want to be able to give you information about the current events happening both in our classroom and in our school. I will be using this blog to inform you of the events that will be occurring throughout the school year.

CURRICULUM NIGHT
I am looking forward to meeting with you on Curriculum Night Tuesday, September 1st from 6:00-6:30 in room 104. This is an evening intended for parents only.

MAIL FOLDERS
It is very important that your child returns their mail folder to school everyday. This is a wonderful way to communicate with you and deliver all of those very important papers.

SNACKS
A healthy snack should be brought to school on a daily basis. Please remember that we are a nut free classroom.

Park Kids - After School Care

Another option for after school care has become available for Mann students. The Park District of Oak Park will be offering an after school program called, Park Kids for the 2009 -2010 school year. Field Center will be the location of this program. If you would like to inquire about Park Kids please contact your local Park District.

READING
Unit-Games
Some of the genre the students will be exposed to will be poetry and realistic fiction. All students will be working on comprehension strategies. Readers need to predict what will happen next and be able to revise those predictions as they go. They also need to visualize the setting, characters, and action in a story and be able to summarize.

EVERYDAY MATH
Unit 8
Students are introduced to fractions in many of the lessons. It is important for them to understand that fractions are equal of wholes. We are also counting up to make change with our coins. This is a very difficult concept. Practicing using real coins is extremely helpful. As always please continue to work on both addition and subtraction facts.

SOCIAL STUDIES
Students will be learning the meaning of past, present, and future. We will also discuss how inventions have made our lives easier. They will also see the importance of caring on traditions and customs.

SCIENCE
Our mealworms have arrived and observations are being recorded daily. We will be observing the life styles and behaviors of many different insects. Students will learn what needs to be provided for insects to survive. Such things as air, water, food, and space will give insects an opportunity to have a longer life cycle.

Spring Sing and Cast Party

Our Spring Sing is scheduled for Wednesday, March 18th followed by our cast party. The children are looking forward to performing their songs for you and hosting the party immediately following their performance in our classroom. Please join us for the festivities on this special day.

READING
We continue our voyage with Captain Bill Pinkney, the first African American to circumnavigate the globe alone. It began with a factual account of him sailing on his boat named , "The Commitment." Students are able to travel throughout the world with Captain Bill Pinkney as he covered 32,000 miles and a trip that lasted 372 days.

MATH
Unit 6, With the use of fact triangles and fact families children will learn the relationship of subtraction to addition. Three numbers are used to generate a fact family. Children will also be introduced to measuring in centimeters as well as inches. Students will be using both analog and digital clocks and discussing the advantages and disadvantages of both.

SCIENCE
Our unit on the solar system continues to be engaging for all of our students. We have a field trip planned to the Adler Planetarium for Thursday, April 30th.

SOCIAL STUDIES
We were able to have a wonderful presentation by Lynn Allen from the Multi-Cultural center on African American culture. They students enjoyed learning about the history of African Americans.

READING
Unit 5, Theme: Weather
Genre will include nonfiction, fiction, poetry, and informal writing about weather. We will continue to work on long and short vowel sounds, verbs, adjectives, and compound words. Please continue to read nightly with your child. Improving vocabulary and comprehension skills are a necessary component to their success.

EVERYDAY MATH
In Unit 5 students are learning about place value, greater and less than, relationships between numbers, number stories, number models, and addition and subtraction facts. A new concept called," What's My Rule?" is a routine that provides a format for thinking about rule-based relationships between pairs of numbers and also provides practice with number patterns and number facts.

SOCIAL STUDIES
Our focus this month is to learn about the contributions of African Ameicans to our society and to the world. We will be doing several projects and reading biographies to bring a greater awareness and sensitivity of people of all cultures.

SCIENCE
We are studying about the different phases of the moon and learning some interesting facts about our Solar System. Students are engaged and taking part in a variety of activities.

This program can be used to familiarize oneself with the different shapes, their relations, and their proportions. By rotating them, one can also get a good feel for their symmetry. But the real purpose behind the program is to use it as a tool to learn and practice fractions.

Let's illustrate this with an example. Lets assume that the hexagon represents a whole or one unit. In that case, a triangle represents one sixth (or 1/6), so it is very easy to show graphically that 3 * (1/6) = 1/2 (i.e. that three triangles occupy the same space as half a hexagon). You can do this by dragging out three triangles and one hexagon and laying down the triangles right next to the hexagon or even on top of it as the following figures show:

Of course, you can make any shape or combination of shapes represent one unit; even more, you can have any combination of shapes represent any number of units. The possibilities would be endless.

What score will you achieve in ten turns. Adjust the hand speed to be really slow-3. It is a little hard so this is a great one to practice as a whole class in first grade. Second graders can do it by themselves.

Here are a couple of extra ideas...

What kids can do to help themselves
Play with magnetic letters. See how quickly you can put them in alphabetical order while singing the alphabet song.
Look at written materials around your house and at road signs to see if you can spot familiar words and letter patterns.
Write notes, e-mails, and letters to your friends and family. Represent each sound you hear as you write.
When you're trying to sound out a word, pay close attention to the print. Try to look at all the letters in the word, not just the first one or two.
What parents can do to help at home
For a younger reader, help your child learn the letters and sounds of the alphabet. Occasionally point to letters and ask your child to name them.
Help your child make connections between what he or she might see on a sign or in the newspaper and the letter and sound work he or she is doing in school.
Encourage your child to write and spell notes, e-mails, and letters using what he knows about sounds and letters.
Talk with your child about the "irregular" words that she'll often see in what she's reading. These are the words that don't follow the usual letter-sound rules. These words include said, are, and was. Students must learn to recognize them "at sight."
Consider using computer software that focuses on developing phonics and emergent literacy skills. Some software programs are designed to support children in their writing efforts. For example, some programs encourage kids to construct sentences and then cartoon characters will act out the completed sentence. Other software programs provide practice with long and short vowel sounds and creating compound words.

READING
We have just begun our unit called,"Our Neighborhood at Work." Students will be reading and learning about communities and the people who work in communities. They will also be developing the ability to use comprehension strategies such as clarifying, predicting, making connections, and summarizing.

EVERYDAY MATH
In Unit 4 students will work with linear measures and review and extend their use of thermometers and clocks. They will continue to practice using rulers and tape measures. Another activity will be to make a number scroll. Scrolls increase a child's understanding of place value.

SOCIAL STUDIES
"Where We Live," introduces the students to the meaning of what some of Earth's natural resources are. We will also be having discussions about our seasons and the different types of weather we experience.

SCIENCE
Activities about the moon's phases will be discussed and explored. A variety of resources will be used to help students have a better understanding of the moon and how it relates to our planet earth.

Winter Wear

As the winter months are fast approaching, please be sure to send your child to school with appropriate attire. Hats, mittens, and boots will help keep your child warm when they are outside socializing and exercising. Sometimes our socks get wet when we are changing into our shoes by our lockers. It is always nice to have a spare pair of dry socks in our lockers to put on. We want every child to remain dry and comfortable while working in the classroom. It is also a good idea to practice putting on their winter attire at home.

Students will be writing expository and narrative stories on modes transportation. We will continue to work in our Handwriting Without Tears workbook on a daily basis.

SOCIAL STUDIES

The children will be focusing on the community. We will be learning about all the different jobs one might see in a community. We will also be using our map skills to compare communities all over the world.

Unit: Physical Science
